Michael and Karin will introduce you to the sweet and the savory personality of the Landsat 8 image bands, and demonstrate the rich and robust utility of each of the bands. Which band is best for mapping vegetation? What about soil moisture or bare ground? What's the best way to explore, compare, and leverage image bands in Earth Engine, so that you can pull out all the best flavors? Come join our cooking class. The only ingredients are you and Earth Engine. See you there!

This event includes a pre-recorded talk followed by live Q&A with the presenter and product experts.

Register for events: Attend one or more of the Earth Engine events happening over the next two weeks!

Activity: Load a Landsat 8 image or composite, and modify the band visualization.
  1. Log-in to code.earthengine.google.com.
  2. Go to the Earth Engine public data catalog, specifically the USGS Landsat 8 Surface Reflectance Tier 1 found here.
  3. Scroll to bottom of code sample, and click on “Open in Code Editor”
  4. In the Earth Engine Code Editor, on Line 23, you’ll find bands: ['B4', 'B3', 'B2'],
  5. Try changing the band combinations for the following (also on this slide):
  • 'B4','B3','B2' -- Natural color: Only visible light, similar to looking down when you’re flying in a plane
  • 'B5','B4','B3' -- Color infrared: Vegetation pops in red
  • 'B7','B5','B3' -- False color: Shows floods or newly burned land
  • 'B2','B6','B7' -- False color: Differentiates between snow, ice, and clouds
